ECVC condemns the decision of the European Commission and Mercosur leaders to conclude the negotiations of the EU-Mercosur FTA which is opposed by all farmers and farm workers organisations for its social impact and the negation of the need for sustainable food systems it represents. . It also fully contradicts all the blocs’ national governments’ commitments regarding the fight against Climate Change.
Morgan Ody: “As European farmers we don’t want to compete with farmers from Mercosur. Our job is not to be in a worldwide competition but to produce healthy food for Europeans.”
Andoni Garcia adds: “We will now watch carefully what governments and political groups who claimed during famers’ historical mobilisation at the beginning of this year to be close to the farmers will actually do. They have to take a stance against it and this antidemocratic way of negotiating trade agreement.”
Achieving food sovereignty and respecting peasants' rights should be the basis for a new framework for international food exchanges, so that the trade system is fair and contributes to justice and peace.
Farmers will continue to mobilise against this FTA and will, in a way or another, put an end to it.
