Launch of the comic book Soil Sisters: Women at the heart of European agriculture

20 October 2025

Today marks the launch of Soil Sisters, a powerful new comic book created by the EU-funded SWIFT project that explores gender in European agriculture and the Common agricultural Policy (CAP).

Soil Sisters brings to life the experiences of women and gender-diverse people in European rural areas. Through vivid storytelling and illustrations by artist Jean Saboureault, it reveals the daily challenges faced by farmers in Poland, Austria, and Spain, such as unequal access to land, credit, and training. The comic illustrates how women and gender-diverse people can shape the future of agriculture.

Rooted in real testimonies and policy dialogues held earlier this year, Soil Sisters explores critical questions:

  • Why do fewer women take over farms or access agricultural training?
  • How do gender norms and outdated policies limit opportunities?
  • What would a gender-equitable Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) look like?

The comic complements SWIFT’s policy brief and reports, offering a powerful, accessible way to understand the intersection of gender, agriculture, and EU policy. SWIFT is a reminder that sustainable agriculture must be feminist, inclusive and equitable.
