As a member of La Via Campesina (LVC), the European Coordination Via Campesina (ECVC) joins farmers’ organisations worldwide in condemning the destruction of the Union of Agricultural Work Committees (UAWC) Seed Bank in Hebron, Palestine.
On 31 July 2025, Israeli forces demolished the Seed Multiplication Unit of the UAWC in Hebron, destroying warehouses, equipment, seedlings, and all the resources needed to preserve native seeds. This is a devastating blow to Palestinian food sovereignty and a direct attack on the agricultural and cultural heritage of farming communities.
For decades, UAWC has safeguarded traditional seeds, a vital part of farmers’ identity, resilience, and autonomy. Their destruction is a violation of human rights, farmers’ rights, and international law. Hunger must never be used as a weapon of war.
ECVC stands in solidarity with Palestinian farmers and calls on the international community to stop these attacks and protect the right of peoples everywhere to produce, exchange, and preserve their own seeds, free from violence and oppression.
