First European Forum for Food Sovereignty

8 July 2011

MEDIA Invitation to the Nyeleni European Forum for Food Sovereignty. The first European Forum for Food Sovereignty will take place in Krems, in Austria, on 16-21st August 2011. The journalists of all over Europe are cordially invited to this Forum to follow this historical process that will set the basis of tomorrow agriculture and food systems.

Farmers, social movements, consumers groups and citizens’ organizations will be present in Krems with the goal of strengthening, broadening and building a movement for Food Sovereignty in Europe. More than 500 representatives are expected, from over 40 European countries.

Preparations for the Forum have been underway for more than a year, as the organizers aim to ensure transparency and grassroots participation. During 5 days, theses representatives will reinforce their common understanding of what Food Sovereignty means, identify common challenges and obstacles and build common strategies to make Food Sovereignty a reality in Europe.

The food crisis is linked to the actual financial, economical, social, environmental and climate crisis. As key sector, agriculture is part of the solution but public policies are going the wrong way. Food Sovereignty has grown to encompass a critique of neoliberal politics which provides an entirely different framework for organizing food and agricultural policies internationally, regionally and locally. The framework was further reinforced by the first Nyeleni Forum that took place in Mali in 2007. This year, the Food Sovereignty movement will be empowered at European level by putting in place the basis of a European network for Food Sovereignty.

Representatives of participating organizations will be available for interviews.

A press group will be present at the Forum to help find out the bests interlocutors the journalists might need.
