Three hundred organisations representing peasant and organic farmers, seed savers and breeders, environmental NGOs and other actors in the GMO-free sector have adressed a letter to the Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans, urging him to keep new GMOs regulated.
The letter was sent in anticipation of Frans Timmermans speech in the European Parliament on May 22 to discuss the upcoming proposal on "new genomic techniques" with the Members of the Parliament. It states :
“We conclude that the best way is to maintain the current legal system for all generations of GMOs and keep new GMOs regulated under the existing EU rules including all labelling and traceability requirements. This will minimise potential negative impacts on nature, human and animal health and will uphold the precautionary principle and consumers and farmers’ right to information as key political and social achievements of the EU.”
