As negotiations between the Commission, the Council and the European Parliament (trilogue) on the proposal on GMOs obtained with new genomic techniques (NGTs) have now started, negotiators will soon address the issue of traceability and labelling. In this context, ECVC sent on 14 May 2025 a statement to the negociators from the Parliament and Council, highlighting the fact that to ensure traceability of GMOs obtained by NGTs, it is absolutely essential to uphold the requirement of mandatory publication of the processes for detecting and identifying genetic modifications obtained by NGTs (as currently provided for in Directive 2001/18/EC). These processes are necessary to identify the presence of patented traits resulting from NGTs in seeds, plants and products, and therefore to protect farmers and small traditional seed producers from several abuses made possible by the draft NGT Regulation.
