Open letter – Patents, ANSES reports and detection/identification : the European Parliament must not consolidate its position on GMOs/NGTs before these key issues are resolved

3 April 2024

Brussels, 3rd April 2024 – ECVC has sent an open letter to Members of the European Parliament concerning a possible consolidation vote of the Parliament position on the proposal to deregulate GMOs/new genomic techniques (NGTs), which could be expected end of April. On 9 April, the coordinators of the Environment Committee will have to decide on whether this second vote will take place.

With this open letter, which can be downloaded in the sidebar, ECVC is calling on MEPs to oppose this second vote in plenary. ECVC had already denounced the position adopted by the Parliament in February as unacceptable and unapplicable. Now, the Parliament cannot confirm its position in first reading as many key issues remain unresolved in this controversial dossier: patentability of NGTs, reports of ANSES challenging the scientific basis of the proposal and EFSA opinion awaited in July 2024, as well as the recent launch of detection and identification research programmes.

Faced with so many crucial and unresolved issues, all of which have concrete implications for the rights of farmers, citizens, human health and the environment, the European Parliament cannot decide to validate its position on this issue at this stage without seriously casting doubts upon its integrity.
