On January 29th 2009, the lawsuit against Euskal Herriko Laborantza Ganbararen Lagunak and its president Michel Berhocoirigoin will take place in Bayonne (F) on the initiative of the prefect of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.
European Coordination Via Campesina defends the EHLG in the legal attack by the French state This lawsuit aims at the prohibition of the association and Michel Berhocoirigoin risks one year of prison. The defendants are accused of the creation of confusion between public and private affairs. The EHLG was created in 2005 by the local branch of the Confédération Paysanne, union member of the European Coordination Via Campesina, to meet the real needs for the peasants, men and women, to implement short commercial circuits, to promote a more sustainable and autonomous method of agriculture, to develop support policies for the installation of young people,… A true work of promotion of peasant agriculture and application of food sovereignty! It is impossible to perceive a crime in the actions and projects of the EHLG, which moreover functions like a transparent, participative and democratic association. What a contradiction to tackle projects which support a local, ecological, and job-creating food production, in a context of a climate, financial and food crisis. We denounce the criminalisation of the peasant initiatives which go against the dominating model of deregulation, of concentration and industrialization of the agricultural and food production. We ask the qualified judge to discharge the EHLG and its president, the French state to stop the legal agression and to support actively this association of defense of peasant agriculture.
