ECVC sheds light on four detailed recommendations for sustainability of European food systems that were sent to DG AGRI and DG SANTE on 30 June 2023. It tackles important and urgent issues which must be included to ensure the viability of the forthcoming Sustainable Food Systems framework law proposal of the Commission, expected for September 2023.
These recommendations tackle 4 key aspects:
- The general provisions and definitions should define food systems as well as food sovereignty properly;
- The minimum sustainability requirements should ensure reversing the current process of concentration of the food system, jobs, rural life and health, increasing the number of farms and farm workers, increasing generation renewal, good social conditions of farm and agriculture workers and a fair access to good food for all people;
- GMOs, including new GMOs, such as New breeding or Genomic Techniques (NBT- NGT), cannot be considered sustainable;
- Fair governance of the food systems must be enabled.
