ECVC vehemently denounces the arrest of 52 farmers in Paris today as part of a peaceful occupation of the Ministry of Agriculture, including Morgan Ody, ECVC General Coordinator of La Via Campesina and member on the Coordinating Committee of the ECVC CC, the world's largest peasant movement, and three national spokespeople from La Confédération Paysanne.
Farmers gathered to express their anger and frustration on the management of the DNC crisis (contagious nodular dermatosis, an emerging bovine viral epidemic) in France and the EU-Mercosur agreement. Reports suggest that journalists were prevented from filming the events and that those arrested are likely to spend the night in custody.
ECVC calls for the immediate release of the arrested farmers By the French authorities. ECVC calls on the French Government to listen meet the demands of La Confédération Paysanne, the country's third biggest agricultural union, instead of repressing the voices that do not support the current status quo. ECVC also alerts the European Institutions to these concerning events, and asks them to ensure democracy and farmers' rights to protest are respsected across EU Member States and to call on the French Government to release them immediately.
