A coalition of farmers, breeders, environmentalists, beekeepers and citizens invites you to join our protest against the deregulation of GMOs obtained by new genomic techniques (NGTs).
WHEN? 16 June from 8 am to 12 pm. There will be speeches from 9 am, and a symbolic action performed by farmers at 10 am.
WHERE? In front of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Boulevard Pierre-Pflimlin.
WHY? On 17 June, the European Parliament will vote on the proposed deregulation of new genetically modified (GM) plants produced with new genetic modification techniques, such as CRISPR/Cas.
If adopted, this law will strip away essential EU GMO safeguards for a whole new generation of GM plants. No mandatory risk assessment. No protection against contamination. No detection and identification protocols. No labelling for the products, misleading people about the food they buy. GMOs could enter our seeds, fields and food without oversight - and without people even knowing.
What’s more, the law will open the door to patented seeds. Farmers and small seed breeders will face risks of patent claims, legal threats, and dependency on multinational biotech corporations. Without regulation, patents will cover not only GM seeds but also conventional seeds, leading to a widespread privatisation of genetic resources by a handful of patent-holding multinational companies (Corteva, Bayer-Monsanto, Syngenta, etc.).
In the past, the European Parliament voted to restrict EU patent law to avoid these abuses.
But these protections have disappeared during closed-door trilogue negotiations among the European Commission, the Council, and the Parliament.
The European Parliament must reject this dangerous deal.
People have the right to know what is in their food. Breeders, farmers and processors - whether conventional or organic - have the right to produce GMO-free food and to use seeds which are not covered by patents.
Join us in Strasbourg to stop the deregulation of GMOs and defend transparent, democratic, and precautionary GMO rules in Europe.
