Comrade Márcio Mattos - Movement of Landless Rural Workers - MST

Very moved by the latest painful and tragic news of the assassination of Márcio Mattos, leader of the MST and political reference in the struggle in the state of Bahia, Brazil, the European Coordination Via Campesina wishes to send its condolences and solidarity to his family and the MST.   Together with our comrades of the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST), from ECVC we denounce the murder of comrade Márcio Mattos and demand that the authorities initiate an immediate investigation. According to family and friends, the leader was shot three times in front of his son, while they were at home in the Boa Suerte settlement in the Chapada Diamantina region.   Marcinho, as his friends called him, became one of the main Landless leaders in the state of Bahia, highly regarded for his articulation with left-wing parties, social movements and grassroots organizations. In the MST, still as a young man, he took on the national leadership and assumed those tasks for eight years, standing out for his ability to mobilize the masses.   From this side of the Atlantic, with conviction and solidarity, the European peasant movement supports the popular struggle carried out by the MST in Brazil against big capital and agribusiness. Márcio's commitment to collective struggles and the well-being of rural communities will continue to inspire.   Comrade Márcio: You are with us! You are with us! You are with us!     -ECVC Coordination Committee
