Brussels, November 2012 Expressing solidarity towards the general strike The European Coordination of Via Campesina, and its member organizations, participated in different actions and mobilisations on November 14, 2012 to protest the austerity policies that are currently being instituted in several European countries as a result of directives that the EU has put in place in an attempt to stave off the crisis. These policies, together with the dismantling of the most basic public services, represent neoliberalism's unacceptable attack upon the rights of all the men and women across the European territory. European farmers, both male and female, have long suffered the effects of these neoliberal policies, which continue to destroy European peasant agriculture. Furthermore, at the ECVC, we consider that these types of policies do not resolve the actual causes of the crisis in any way - what's more, they have the opposite effect: these very policies are responsible for the impoverishment of European citizenship, for the destruction of employment and public policies, for the worsening of the labour conditions of male and female workers, while pursuing the interests of companies, banks and their speculative profits. This is why we are declaring our rejection of these policies while expressing our solidarity with all the movements and individuals who resist them, and we mobilise in order to transform our social model in line with food sovereignty. Finally, we also express our solidarity and our commitment towards the appeal coming from the European Social Forum, which took place in Florence last week.
