Dairy crisis: The European Coordination Via Campesina calls for a European summit Today in Belgium milk producers of MIG (EMB member) and FUGEA (ECVC member) poured millions of litres of milk on a field, a figure similar to the amount of milk produced in Wallonia a day. During the last number of days there has been an alarming increase in the number of dairy producers who have committed suicide – many of these cases have not been made public (1). These are acts of desperation. Facing the refusal of the European Union (governments, Commission) to solve the crisis by changing the dairy policy, producers are making desperate cries for help. COPA (2), who have acted against the mobilisation of producers, is also responsible. Because the Council of Ministers and the European Commission are incapable of fulfilling their responsibilities, the European Coordination Via Campesina asks the EU to urgently call for a European Summit of the heads of state on the dairy crisis. This summit should serve as a wake up call to define the framework of another CAP and EU budget which is legitimate on economic, social, environmental and international levels. (1) Milk producers commited suicide last week in the French department of Manche – another producer committed suicide by setting himself on fire in Finistère in Britanny this week (2) The president of the FNSEA, ex-president of COPA was prevented yesterday by producers from opening a breeding fair in Rennes Contacts : Lidia Senra (PT/ES/FR) + 34 609 84 5861- René Louail (FR) + 33 6 7284 8792 Gérard Choplin , ECVC office in Brussels (FR/EN/DE) +32473257378
