The Confederation Paysanne, French member organization of European Coordination Via Campesina, has launched with other organizations (Artisans du Monde, ATTAC and Peuples Solidaires/ActionAid) the on line petition “G20: Don't gamble with our food!” As France is holding the G20 presidency, the petition call on the French president and the minister of agriculture to support sustainable and fair policies, and modes of production and consumption that allow States to secure their food sovereignty and the right to food of their population. Today, one billion people suffer from hunger in the world, which is nearly one out of seven people, and as many suffer from malnutrition. The 2007-2008 food crisis once again highlighted the inability of the trade liberalization policies, and the industrial agriculture pattern that they support, to meet the world food needs: such policies undermine local agriculture. As for industrial agriculture, it is only aimed at meeting solvent consumers' needs. This petition will be delivered to President Nicolas Sarkozy and the Minister of Agriculture Bruno Lemaire on the eve of the G-20 summit under French presidency, on November 3rd and 4th in Cannes.
