A European conference on local agriculture and short food supply chains, organised by the European Commission Directorate General for Agriculture, will be held on Friday 20th of April in Brussels. This event is a joint initiative of Dacian Cioloş, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, and John Dalli, European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy, and it will explore ways and means to mobilise and value the economic potential of local agriculture and short food supply chains. Ecvc has been invited to participate in this conference and a position paper on Small farms and short supply chains has been elaborated for this event. The conference will consist of a plenary session and three parallel workshops: * Workshop A will focus on appropriate CAP support mechanisms. The discussion will be based on how to better address needs of small-scale farm structures and target support schemes towards them, in order to unlock small scale farming potential. * Workshop B will explore facilitating market access for small famers. The discussion will be based on the needs behind developing a scheme for local products to reinforce links between farmers and consumers * Workshop C will discuss a better use of the hygiene and food safety regulatory framework for small food producers. The discussion will be on how to promote the use of flexible provisions among competent authorities. Participation to the conference is on invitation only.
